Verdant House
Te Kahui Waihanga NZIA Southern Award- Interiors 2024
HERE Awards 2024- winner- Colour, Craft and Detail
Verdant house and studio is designed for a Wanaka artist and family.
The cubic volume, organised by a nine square grid, is described by robust buttressed block walls, crossed like the hand drawn plan. The core of the house is a sunken living room/snug circled by a gallery hall to the private household areas. Capped with a folded scoria roof it is a colourful addition to the monochromatic developments of its neighbours.
Intimate interior spaces link diagonally across the plan opening to courtyards and into the surrounding verdant gardens. The house serves as canvas and backdrop to the colour fields of its site. With path meanders it connects to the outlying studio/gallery.
